Fresno County Service-Learning

At California State University, Fresno, there are many courses offered which connect to service learning. These include courses such as Children and Families in Crisis, Communication and Learning, Journey of Adulthood, Principles of Sociology, and Contemporary Social Issues. These courses are dedicated to meeting community needs while enhancing the academic understanding of students. Equal emphasis is placed on providing meaningful service to the community and a memorable learning experience for the students.

Over 4,000 students at Fresno State provide over 60,000 hours of community service. Fresno State has said that the students which participate in these activities achieve better grades, stay in school longer, graduate at higher rates, show a greater interest in graduate studies, and report higher levels of satisfaction with their undergraduate education and career choice.

Fresno's Character Counts Program

Fresno also participates in the Character Counts! program. Character Counts! is a nonprofit organization which uses a framework based on basic values, which they call the Six Pillars of Character. These pillars are: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Millions of schools and communities also use the Character Counts! program to enhance their curriculums in a positive way. Character Counts! has been proven to reduce behavioral incidents by 60% as well as to reduce negative behavior in schools by 47%.
